Run your Mac network from a Windows server

A new Mac based business, such as a design or film company, may start life on a couple of Mac laptops. But if the company expands, the time will come when the sanity and security of the organisation is at risk unless the move to a proper centralised server is made. Shared central resources and services with a secure backup become an imperative.

A Mac server will seem the obvious choice, even though there will be a bit of a compromise around the PC that the bookkeeper uses on Fridays. But, counterintuitively, it is actually worth stopping to consider the merits of a Windows server for this scenario.

Why on earth would you want to do that?

Firstly, and very importantly, cost. Lovely as Mac servers are, they are not cheap! Windows servers have to be sharply priced and the range of choices is enormous.

Secondly, Microsoft Exchange. Quite simply, Exchange is the weapon of choice for business. It is the tried and tested solution for collaborative working, handling all the email, calendar and task list functions needed by most organisations. Try as they may, Mac server solutions just simply don’t measure up to this. And with the latest incarnations of the Mac OS and MS Exchange, the Mac users can stick to their favourite Apple Mail and iCal software and still experience full integration with the Exchange services.

And finally, the Accounts PC can come in out of the cold and enjoy all the benefits experienced by the Macs. What’s more, employees can have the flexibility of working on their preferred platform rather than being railroaded into complying with company policy.

So if you’re interested in an economic server solution for your Mac based business that will deliver excellent business services, then Microsoft could be the answer.
